(Every Wednesday we do our reportorial thing, submitting to the Tico Times, a national English -language newspaper, a short report of events at Lake Arenal. The reports appear on the Community Connections page of the Weekender section of the Tico Times. We repeat them here.)
Arenal Report for Tico Times September 8 2006
The absence of pothole pain has led to driving euphoria as the Tronadora road passes through the village of San Luis. Not only the wide, smooth surface but also the nearly complete removal of the two speed bumps in San Luis has drivers zooming along without thought for their shock absorbers and other vehicular vulnerabilities.

The architecture/engineering/contracting firm of Landmark SA is planning to give drivers more reason to stop in San Luis, however. According to principals Christian Lara and Anthony Rizzo, Landmark is to begun construction of a small retail center within a few months. Present thoughts include a pharmacy, a convenience store with wine, and a very nice coffee shop. The site is at the entrance to San Luis before the first house on the left. Behind the retail center will be an 18-lot development. Christian, like Puerto San Luis Lodge and Yacht Club

empresario Mario Martinez, is a local person who did well in Boston, where both were associated with the Rizzo family.

On August 30, Fuentes Verdes Ecological Association brought their development concerns to the Tilaran Municipal Council. Association Secretary Sandy Shaw made a thorough presentation about the "explosion" of development around Lake Arenal, distributed a geomorphological map showing fault lines and unstable areas, and pointed out that many developments are underway without benefit of oversight by the various authorities meant to enforce the regulations. Asking the council members "What is sane development?" Sandy pointed out future dangers of current trends, and suggested a course of action for the Council, offering the help of Fuentes Verdes in providing oversight.
