(Every Wednesday we do our reportorial thing, submitting to the Tico Times, a national English -language newspaper, a short report of events at Lake Arenal. The reports appear on the Community Connections page of the Weekender section of the Tico Times. We repeat them here.)
Arenal Report for Tico Times September 13 2006
Bob Benjamin, Sabalito troubadour, continues to play his folk rock, much of it original, Sunday at 6:30 pm at Mystica Restaurant. Fans enjoy pizza and other Italian fare while enjoying Bob's energetic guitar work and singing, usually accompanied by Phil on bongos and Ed Yurica on bass guitar. Now joining the performances are Bob's two sons, Joshua and Paul, visiting indefinitely from Cambria, CA.

Our Dutch hoteliers, Kees and Willeke Voogd, of Monte Terras Bed and Breakfast in Tronadora, showed off their new cabina building with a big afternoon party on Sept. 17. The building adds four double-occupancy rooms with bath and kitchenette at their beautiful location a couple of hundred meters above the lake waters. They also have two in-house rooms with shared bath. The party was also an early celebration of Willeke's Sept. 21 birthday.

Speaking of birthdays, Bryan at Hotel Tilawa, abetted by Helen Hollenbeck, surprised long-time resident and dairy farmer Christina Glass with a party at the hotel on Sept. 6. Christina thought she was merely going to Bryan's weekly veggie blast. That starts at 4 pm every Wednesday and goes on until whenever with guests enjoying pizza, soup, and other dishes based on the

produce from the hotel's several organic gardens. Produce from these gardens is available for sale at the hotel. Locals also get to use the hotel's lake-view pool and the tennis court on these Wednesday parties.

Las Damas del Lago have also decided to use Tilawa on Wednesday afternoons from 3 to 6 for an exchange of books, DVDs, CD, videos, etc., a great idea in this community devoid of English-language libraries and book and DVD stores. Adding to your browsing pleasure will be Chris Sullivan playing classical guitar.

The charming Café Antigua opened last month in home built in 1920. It's located catty-corner from the Tilaran gas station, and now sports a white exterior with blue trim, exterior seating on the front veranda and plenty of interior seating in two breezy and well-windowed rooms. It's open from 11 am to 10 pm seven days, serving tasty "typical" food until evening when owner Hugo Ramirez augments the low-price daily fare with filet mignon and other substantial dishes. There are also long lists of espressos, desserts, and bebidas, making it a nice place to hang out. An Internet service is planned. Reservations for special events can be made by telephone at 695-6053 or 374-5805 or by email at arsnova@racsa.co.cr.
