(Every Wednesday we do our reportorial thing, submitting to the Tico Times, a national English -language newspaper, a short report of events at Lake Arenal. The reports appear on the Community Connections page of the Weekender section of the Tico Times. We repeat them here.)
Arenal Report for Tico Times September 1 2006
As of August 23, drivers on the road through San Luis to Tronadora are reveling in straight-line driving, at least until they get to the Chimurria junction. Heavy machinery and industrious crews have ripped up much of the old pot-holed asphalt and laid down a wide, smooth gravel surface. It seems likely they'll reach Tronadora by the end of the week. Whom do local residents have to thank for this sudden brightening of their driving lives. Perhaps instrumental was the month-old threat by Tronadora residents to blockade the road to Arenal as well as Tronadora wasn't soon repaired.

Also industrious are Arenal developers, who have big plans for an expatriate population explosion. Fuentes Verdes members started a tally of all the lots being created by developers around the lake and got to 404 before they ran out of fingers and toes. Recently a local taxi driver pointed to a location in San Luis which he hears will be the site of what sounds like a strip mall. Is there a Starbucks in our future? An Olive Garden?
