Casa Mañana
Every Wednesday we do our reportorial thing, submitting to the Tico Times, a national English -language newspaper, a short report of events at Lake Arenal. The reports appear on the Community Connections page of the Weekender section of the Tico Times. We post them to the website on deadline day, so they appear online 10 days before appearing in the Tico Times.)
Arenal Report for Tico Times November 29 2006
Lake Arenal area artists have been invited once again to display their work at the Hotel Tilawa, this time on Wendesday, December 13, from 2 pm. At the first art show, on Nov. 22, the displays of paintings, ceramics, jewelry and other art filled the hotel's restaurant and bar space, so, according to a Tilawa spokesperson, this time they will also use the large lobby, giving more artists the opportunity to display an even greater range of quality pieces and the rest of us a chance to buy art and crafts for Christmas.

Also on Wednesdays, the weekly vegetable bash continues at Tilawa when locals have open use of the pool, hot tub, and tennis court as well as the opportunity to indulge in soup and pizza made from vegetables harvested from the hotel's three gardens. These social events start at 4 pm.

Tilaran's relatively new Comision de Fiscalization Ambiental continues to gird itself for regular oversight of activities that affect the environmental health of the Arenal Basin. (And poor health here will affect the lowland

agriculture and the coastal areas of rampant resort development where water and electrical needs are growing rapidly.) In a recent training session, the commission, composed of representatives from vernment agencies, the municipality, and Fuentes Verdes, studied maps showing locations of the greatest concentration of contaminants and also the most important water sources. Thus they are determining the areas of greatest need for oversight and areas for reforestation.

A specific concern involves septic systems, which now, subject to no inspection, can be inadequate and improperly installed. A project is to develop exacting standards for septic systems and the requirement of inspection before they are covered up. Presently, the final installation is not necessarily what the original plans depicted.

Following through on dairy and pig farm abuses and identifying all of the area's housing developments are two other commission issues, according to a Fuentes Verdes representative.
