| Developers and contractors
beware: there can be consequences for cavalier treatment of the countryside.
Officers from MINAE, the Ministry of Environment and Energy have recently
confronted two Lake Arenal developers for clear-cutting and for dumping
trash in a stream. We'll provide more precise information about MINAE's
actions next week.
Continuing this exercise in
anonymity, a shy friend tells us of a need for English teachers
in a program in Tilaran that meets in an ICE building. This friend,
B, is substituting for G, who has gone to the States for three weeks
after taking over a class from A, who has gone to work as a chef
at one of our most upscale establishments, La Mansion, which is
across the lake between Nuevo Arenal and the dam. Using programmed
materials called Side by Side, B is teaching English to 5 to

three nights a week from 5:30 to 9:30 pm. B is resisting the plea
to continue teaching 5 nights a week and Saturday besides. It's obvious
that more teachers are needed. We have at this time at least the first
name of the director of this scholarly enterprise. It's Nuria. Nuria's
number is 669-5065. Nuria does not speak English - yet. Teachers are
paid by the hour.
Roberta Ward Smiley is trying
yet another phone number. This one may be a keeper as she no longer
has to leave the house to use the cell phone. It's 856-2977. Call
her for native trees, for a guided tour through La Reserva, and
for information about the Lake Arenal Women's Lunch Group and their
Sunday, July 23, musical fundraiser at the party house on the Alberto
Herrera finca in La Tejona
