Every Wednesday we do our reportorial thing, submitting to the Tico Times, a national English -language newspaper, a short report of events at Lake Arenal. The reports appear on the Community Connections page of the Weekender section of the Tico Times. We post them as of the Tico Times Wednesday deadline, so they are online 10 days before they appear in the newspaper.)
Arenal Report for Tico Times June 21 2006
Students from the Colegio de Nuevo Arenal on Arbor Day planted 200 trees around the two springs providing water to the town of Nuevo Arenal. They were assisted by employees of MINAE, El Ministerio del Ambiente y Energia (environment and energy). The springs had already been fenced off by employees of AYA, the Insituto de Acueductos y Alcantarillados (water and sewage systems) to keep cattle and horses away from the water sources. The 200 trees provide additional protection to keep Nuevo Arenal's water supply clean. According to north shore resident Al Almeida, the two springs are located in the hills about two and three miles north of Nuevo Arenal. The students worked all morning on the project. Enthusiastic artist/entrepreneur Juan Carlos Ruiz recently sent everyone a flyer with some enticing words about his art studio/coffee shop. Casa del Lago is, he writes, "…a bohemian place that invites you to contemplation of the beautiful landscape that surrounds the studio as well as the artwork that is created there…Have breakfast or lunch with us or just drink a cup of coffee. We promise you that you will enjoy a wonderful aesthetic experience in all its aspects." Casa del Lago is at the west end of the lake, 15 kilometers from Nuevo Arenal and the same from Tilaran.
