Every Wednesday we do our reportorial thing, submitting to the Tico Times, a national English -language newspaper, a short report of events at Lake Arenal. The reports appear on the Community Connections page of the Weekender section of the Tico Times. We repeat them here.)
Arenal Report for Tico Times July 12 2006
"Help us help others," headlines the flyer from Damas del Lago promoting their "concierto-baile" this Sunday, July 23, from 3 to 9 pm at the Finca Herrera party house at La Tejona. The Ladies of the Lake, formerly just a monthly lunch club, plans to assist the local communities in various projects, including recycling.

The event features Bob Benjamin playing from 5 to 8 pm. There will be games, food, drink, dancing, and a raffle with about 20 prizes. The entry fee is 1000 colones for adults and 500 colones for kids. For more info and directions, call 856-2977.

Speaking of directions, from the north - or Nuevo Arenal - side of the lake, make note of Tilawa Resort as you pass it. From there it's 1.2 miles to the road up to La Tejona. From the Tilaran side, figure on 1.1 miles from Cinco Esquinas to the La Tejona Road. At this road, there's a small sign saying Energia, 1 km and an arrow pointing uphill. There is also one of developer John Wilson's

many huge three-legged signs there.Head up the one-lane road for about half a mile. When you reach a "T," bear right and within 200 yards you'll see in a field on the right the party house, a nice-looking yellow building with an orange roof. Close by on your left will be several wind turbines.

Citizens of Tronadora did some tourism-development brainstorming at a meeting on July 10. 20 to 30 people, including seven or eight Gringos, tossed out ideas for encouraging and preparing for increased tourism at the village, according to attendee Christina Glass. Among the ideas were a language school, classes teaching certain job skills such as boat operation and restaurant work, and the need for good security. The project is funded by eight million colones, apparently from the municipality of Tilaran. It's proposed that some of the money be dedicated to fixing and perhaps upgrading the Tronadora Road, which is again a great test of one's pothole-avoidance skills. At this point, no one in a vehicle of more than two wheels can pass the test.
