Every Wednesday we do our reportorial thing, submitting to the Tico Times, a national English -language newspaper, a short report of events at Lake Arenal. The reports appear on the Community Connections page of the Weekender section of the Tico Times. We post them to the website on deadline day, so they appear online 10 days before appearing in the Tico Times.)
Arenal Report for Tico Times January 18 2006
Restaurante Colibri on the Tronadora Road in San Luis has changed management and language, reopening on January 20 as Hummingbird Restaurant and Lava Rock Bar. The Hummingbird will add an Italian emphasis to the traditional fare, featuring a variety of pastas. The new owner is San Jose's Roxana Diaz, who has five years of food and beverage experience in the capital. Her older son, Rajinder Dhillon, manages the Khanda Restaurant in Rohrmoser. Assisting her at Hummingbird during time off from his university studies is her younger son, Andres. The entrepreneurial Roxana will also feature coffee and pastries in the afternoons for people who want to hang out for a bit to admire Hummingbird's wonderful view of Lake Arenal through its array of picture windows. In an alcove of the restaurant Roxana will also function as a concierge, offering services especially to newcomers but also to current residents who could use the help of a thoroughly bilingual person. She claims 20 years experience as a concierge. She says she's fallen in love with the Arenal area and so has moved from San Jose.

Speaking of new residents as well as of Puerto San Luis, Richard and Mary Kelly, who on January 18 broke ground on a property they've purchased near Cinco Esquinas, held a potluck open house on January 22 at the house they are renting in San Luis from Christina Glass. With flyers headlined "Una Fiesta de Los Amigos (Nuevo y Viejo)," Richard and Mary, who are from Bend, Oregon, invited the local expats "to celebrate friendships both old and new." The Kellys supplied bocas and bebidas to get the party rolling and led the way in an afternoon and evening of conversation and dancing.
