| "Response
to the animal shelter project so far has been terrific," reported
Fuentes Verdes Ecological Association secretary Sandy Shaw following
Feb. 4's executive committee meeting. Fuentes Verdes, seeking to establish
an animal shelter between Tilaran and Canas, voted to donate $350
seed money. Individuals have donated $65 as well as items for the
silent auction to be held in Maryland in August. Maryland and part-time
Libano resident Judy Reisman has reported that t-shirts designed by
the triplets at Lucky Bug Gallery and also bags of Costa Rican coffee
are selling "like hotcakes" at the veterinary clinic where
she volunteers. Rio Frio macadamia farm and Coopeldos, a coffee company,
are supplying gifts for US donors. Anyone wishing to donate money
by direct deposit to the animal shelter account at Banco Nacional
can get in touch with FV treasurer John Nicholas at 694-4041 or nicholas@racsa.co.cr.
In other Fuentes Verdes business,
President Ed Yurica reported that as a result of his presentation
to the Tilaran Municipal Council of the FV "position statement"
on water quality and development around Lake Arenal, he's been invited
to participate in the planning commission. He'll be able to raise
other FV concerns such as the worsening signage around the lake
and the enforcement of rainwater drainage laws. Ed is also going
to press for zoning rules to protect the
|
watershed when lake-bordering land owned by ICE is affected by the
new international Free Trade Agreement.
The meeting also raised the
subject of monkey bridges. Ed will investigate rules about stringing
cables across the road. Cable has already been donated and payment
volunteered for the cost of labor.
Chimurria (El Roble) resident
June Griffen is still working on the project to provide major facial
surgery for 4-year-old Joshua Segura Alvarado of Tilaran. She will
be setting up an account at Coopemex Bank to pay for transportation
to Florida for Joshua and his parents for examination by surgeons
who will donate their services if all goes well.
Rhode Island's Marcie and Mike
Wagner on Feb. 5 hosted a Super Bowl party at their new San Luis
home, where all enjoyed the good food if not the final score. All
attendees with any interest in American football seemed to be Seahawk
fans except for circumspect Steeler fan Bobbie Carter, a Casa Mañana
guest from South Carolina, who kept his joy well constrained and
found his new acquaintances just as convivial when he left as they
had been when he arrived with wife Ann.
