Every Wednesday we do our reportorial thing, submitting to the Tico Times, a national English -language newspaper, a short report of events at Lake Arenal. The reports appear on the Community Connections page of the Weekender section of the Tico Times. We post them to the website on deadline day, so they appear online 10 days before appearing in the Tico Times.)
Arenal Report for Tico Times March 21 2007

A tiny unwanted dog tossed from a car at the bridge into Tilaran has found a loving home far to the north in Homer, Alaska, a legendary sportfishing port. Dave Manson, one of several Homerites who spend part of each year at their remodeled Tico homes in the Tronadora/Chimurria area, sent us a recent article from the weekly Homer News telling how his wife Jeanne, her sister, Mary West, and Mary's husband Herb searched in the bushes near the bridge until they found the abandoned Chihuahua, uninjured. Mary had a local shoe repair shop fashion a dog carrier out of a duffel bag. After a long multi-stage trip back to Alaska - quite a contrast to its short flight over the bridge - the dog is a prized pet, sharing the home with Mary West's Shih Tzu, Dudley, and learning a few English words as well as its name, Bonita.
The Mansons are now raising money in Alaska to contribute to a fund for a mobile veterinary unit in the Lake Arenal area to spay and neuter homeless dogs. To find out how to contribute, email these warm-hearted Alaskans at manson@acsalaska.net.

Preparation of the new children's library in Tilaran is gaining momentum as the April 15 grand opening nears. Leslie Woods' recent report to the Ladies of the Lake revealed that 2000 books have been collected. The focus is on Spanish books for young children but, she said, according to Susi Butterfield's detailed report of the meeting, that they intend to have

eventually an adult library and a large selection of English books. Many computers have also been donated for a computer room. The group has raised over $4,000 so far, and some of this is likely to go for security system to protect the computers. Much has already been spent on preparing the building. It's planned that an earmarked donation will pay for a part-time librarian. The library will be open on Monday, Wednesday, and Saturday from 10 am to 6 pm. It's located in a yellow building next to the old school building across from the central park about one block east of the bus station.
At the Grand Opening the winners of the Name the Library contest and the Color the Library contest will be announced. The library is located in a yellow building next to the old school building across from the park one block east of the bus station.
In the library will be a Quiet Room/Silent Reading Room. Arts and crafts will be offered, these activities providing incentive for children to return books.
Volunteers are needed for work and clean-up prior to the opening as well as to assist the librarian once the library is open.
Suggested donations include arts and crafts materials and toys as well as little tables, chairs and stools such as may be found at the House of Plastic in Tilaran. To find out more about donating or volunteering, email Leslie at tronadoratwo@yahoo.com or call her at 692-1204.
