Lalo Rojas, one
of Costa Rica's two top saxophonists, who has played with Ruben Blades
and many well-known musicians such as Sting, Winston Marsalis, and
Lionel Ritchie, led an charitable evening of Latin jazz on February
24 at the Café Estudio Casa Delagua
at the west end of Lake Arenal. Nearly 60.000 colones was earned to
benefit the new Public Library of Tilaran for Children, a project
of the Ladies of the Lake and Ministry of Public Education. About
50 people enjoyed the wonderful music while dining, wineing and dancing
in the very pleasant lakeside art gallery/café. Local composer/guitarist
Bob Benjamin and his group Traveling Light joined Rojas in entertaining
the exhuberant music fans.
The event was organized by
Casa Delagua owner/artist Juan Carlos Ruiz and Patricia Brenes,
owner of Tilaran's Mexican restaurant Taqueria Las Lenitas. Patricia
is a long-time friend of Lalo Rojas and so provided the connection
which made the evening possible. Their intent is to continue promoting
quality artistic activities to benefit the culture
|
in the lake communities.
Further promoting such culture,
an artists' association is beginning an inventory of all the artists
around the lake, and the head of the Ministry of Culture, Youth,
and Sports was to consult with organizers in Tilaran the week following
Lalo's performance.
