Every Wednesday we do our reportorial thing, submitting to the Tico Times, a national English -language newspaper, a short report of events at Lake Arenal. The reports appear on the Community Connections page of the Weekender section of the Tico Times. We post them to the website on deadline day, so they appear online 10 days before appearing in the Tico Times.)
Arenal Report for Tico Times August 8 2007
Ed and Leslie Woods, dedicated volunteers and organizers at the new children's library in Tilaran report further progress with the library's offerings and hours. The library currently is open Mondays, Wednesday, Saturdays, and Sundays. In September the plan is to also open the library on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 10 to 5 with the help of a retired teacher/librarian who will be moving to the area and will give two days of her timke every week.

The library recently added over 400 Spanish titles as well as several hundred new English books. The English collection now totals well over 600 books which makes it probably the largest collection of English language fiction and non-fiction in Guanacaste, according to the Woods. All are available for purchase at only 500 colones each.. All proceeds go directly for the purchase of more books for the Spanish

collection.

In other very constructive news (Beware, this will turn out to be a pun), a committee of Fuentes Verdes Ecological Association members led by President Ed Yurica met on August 10 to work on their new "greenprint" concept. The greenprint will be a guide to the prospective builder, whether an individual or a developer, as to how to build to meet all legal and environmental laws and considerations in Costa Rica. Particpants on the greenprint committee include Irene Lovitz, Patrica Brenes, and Laura Murray as well as Ed Yurica. The purposes of the greenprint are multiple - including not only the aim to prevent bad development by those trying to maximize their returns but also to help those ignorant of or confused by the legal requirements and construction processes in Costa Rica.
