Tilaran to get to Lake Arenal
Tilaran sits on top of a nearly flat-topped hill. When you come from Cañas, you go up a long hill to a stop sign at the first street in Tilaran. On your right at that point is a building with a mural of a cow. The road to Lake Arenal (and thus Casa Mañana) takes off from that same intersection. What you should try to do is make a 300-degree turn to the left before you get to the stop sign. There are no buildings between the two roads for a couple of hundred yards. Thus you can cross an empty area between the last building on your left and the stop sign. At about this point there's a sign on your right giving distances to Tronadora (8 km) and Nuevo Arenal. When you see that sign, you should be thinking of making a careful left turn over to the Arenal road, as shown by the red arrows above. If that doesn't work out, go around a block and come back to the intersection, this time bending off to your right on the Arenal road. If you decide to drive around Tilaran, a very nice town with wide streets, note that you are supposed to stop at many intersections, but many stop signs are faded or missing, though some are represented by the post they once topped. Also realize that cars may park in either direction on both sides of the streets, so sometimes you may think you've ventured onto a one-way street, but you haven't. This is different from Cañas, where most streets are one-way but usually have no signs to give that information to the visitor. |
