| Probably a male oropendola pulling guard duty at the tree full of 2-to-3-foot-long nests. | |
| Early every year 20 or more oropendolas at a time pick out a tree in which to raise the year's offspring and spend considerable time building their deep nests. The eggs and then the chicks rest in the bottom in comparative security while a few male birds guard the community against toucans, snakes, and animals such as opossums, kinkajus, and coatis. The new generation fledged, the community is abandoned and the nests eventually disintegrate. The next year nest-building begins again, often in a different tree. |
