A boyero or oxen driver leads his team with a thin staff. When he simply places the end of the staff on the oxbow between the animals, the team will follow wherever he goes. A very intent drummer boy helps his Tronadora schoolmates celebrate Costa Rican Independence Day, September 15. A bandmate hydrates herself with a baggie full of water
A keel-bill toucan visits a feeding platform in front of Casa Manana. These aggressive birds have a rasping call like a very creaky door. 15 minutes away, windsurfers take advantage of winds that also drive more than 200 million -dollar wind turbines on the surrounding hills.

A hiker guided by a local rancher examines the nationally registered but largely unstudied Farollan Petroglyphs in a river canyon. Farollan hikers cool off in a river pool near the petroglyphs. More than 100 fish - guapote, says the guide - are usually seen in this pool.
These three friendly kids came out of their farmhouse at the end of a Lake Arenal peninsula to greet the rare hikers. On a guided horseback tour atop the northside hills, a rider looks back at Casa Mañana's south side of Lake Arenal.
The large background photo was taken nearby at a descending series of four high waterfalls. You can do hiking or horseback tours to these extraordinary falls.
